Plain-English explanations of the heart and vascular conditions we see, the symptoms that bring people in, the tests used to investigate them and the treatments available. Start from a symptom if you are not sure what is wrong, or go straight to a condition, test or treatment if you already know what you are looking for.

The knowledge base is organised into four sections that follow the order most people move through them. Symptoms cover what you feel and when it is worth having looked at. Conditions explain what a diagnosis means. Tests describe what an investigation involves before you arrive for it. Treatments set out what the options are and what recovery looks like.

Most pages link across to the others, so a symptom page points to the conditions it can indicate, and a condition page points to the tests used to confirm it and the treatments available. You can follow those links rather than coming back to this page each time.

None of it replaces a consultation. It is written to help you arrive at one already knowing the vocabulary, the questions worth asking and what to expect.

Where to start

If you have a symptom and no diagnosis yet, begin with Symptoms. If you already know the diagnosis, go to Conditions. If you have an appointment or a test booked, Tests and Investigations explains what to expect, and Treatments covers the options that may follow.
